Dafydd –
2021 was the year I decided to give wing foiling a go. Having kited for a little while I was keen to buy a wing without a boom as I like the ability to pack it all away small. I had also been pleased with my Ozone kites in the past so I decided to give the 5m V2 Wasp a go.
I started out on an old windsurf board back in April and after a few sessions I was getting the hang of how the wing worked and having some fun trying to tack and gybe in flat water. I also had the opportunity to try a boomed sail. Whilst the boomed sail was fine it wasn’t for me. I like to keep it simple so I appreciate there being only so many places (4 really) that my hands can go with the loops on the Wasp.
Fast forward a few months and I really had the bug! I needed a 6m too! With the COVID and BREXIT impacting delivery times I was fortunate to be able to try another 6m wing whilst waiting for my Wasp. I was immediately struck by how well Ozone had made the Wasp handles now that I was comparing it with another manufacturer. The Wasp handles were so comfortable by comparison. They also felt that they were in the right place for me. I admit that this may just be a familiarity issue given I had spent more time with my 5m Wasp. However, the sheer size of the 6m I was using whilst I waited for my 6m Wasp was very obvious too! I began to wonder if I had made a mistake going up in size. Fear not, when my magic 6m did arrive I can honestly say it felt only modestly bigger than the 5m in handling and certainly much less cumbersome than the 6m I had been borrowing. Same comfy handles with simple positioning too. The 6m has become my go too wing now for most conditions with the 5m reserved for a little more breeze.
Durability appears good too! The only damage after quite a lot of abuse this year was sadly inflicted by myself and the foil. This was quickly fixed using the repair pack supplied. All in all I’m a very happy Wasp owner.
